WEB DESIGN: Making Your Site the Best it can be


I have noticed that many web sites are trying to portray themselves as if they were a TV network. They put top-notch graphics and sound into their web page. What these companies are missing is that their visitors are not watching TV. This works fine for those with broadband high speed connections. The fact is, most are viewing web site on a screen that is between 15 and 19 inches wide, can only see 216 colors, and can only download at 28.8 kb per second.

 

You as a web site owner, designer or any one who has control over a web site should follow a simple rule : make sure you are on a 28.8 connection type in the URL for your web page, hit enter, and hold your breath. If you needed to gasp for air before the page was fully down loaded you really need to cut down on the size of the page. The web page should be no larger then 50K. Try to shoot for less than 30K. The number one visited web site home page is under 21k.

 

All graphic images should be as small as possible. Try to get them smaller than 4k. Going up to 6k is reasonable. When designing a graphic for the web site keep in mind the number of colors being used. As a graphic designer, it is hard to go from millions of color to only 216. Yes, 216 is the number of colors that is available on a web safe color pallet. Use solid colors when designing the image. PhotoShop has made the gradient such a popular tool. Instead of designing graphics and taking pictures and turning them into jpgs to make the web page look good, try using color schemes. Use cell colors to make boarders. Use the negative space on your web site. What is not there is just as important as what is there. Remember sometimes less is more. Think of a typical visitor coming to your web page. Would that extra graphic sell them or keep them coming back again and again. If the answer is yes, by all means keep it. If the answer is "well maybe" or "it just looks good there", throw it. Vertical Business Cards - Better Than Horizontal?

There are only 2 ways to go.

 

You can have a vertical business card... or you can have a horizontal one.

 

(Okay I know some people undoubtedly have circle, and other odd shaped business cards -- but you stay out of this debate!)

 

 

There's no question which is the more common orientation. But which is better?

 

Surely, there's no absolute answer. It depends on what you're looking for... the quantity and layout of your copy... and other factors. So rather than declaring an outright winner, let's take a look at why vertical business cards are a very attractive option.

 

The benefits of vertical business cards

 

The key advantage of vertical business cards is quite simply that they stand out very well. They make an instant impression that -- all things equal, of course -- is difficult for horizontal cards to compete with.

 

Why?

 

Simple. Because vertical business cards are MUCH less common. That's not to say that there aren't plenty of people who have them. After all, there are a lot more people who have vertical business cards than say, chocolate business cards, 3D cards, or other unusual or unique materials. But when you compare them to traditional, run of the mill, horizontal cards, there's no question which stands out.

 

Which is why, chances are, your vertical business card will get a deeper once over. (Even if it's just because you hand it to someone a little differently)

 

The other benefit of vertical business cards is the fact that they are generally NO more expensive than horizontal cards. The downside of vertical business cards

 

If you're not a graphic designer and you're relying on the templates you can find online, there's no doubt about it. The selection of vertical designs is smaller. In some cases, just plain small. You might have to do some more searching to find a design that's right for you.

 

The other potential issue is that it might be a bit more challenging to layout your copy on a vertical business card. That's because you're working with 2 inches of width, rather than 3.5 inches. In other words, website addresses, taglines, and some other content might be a little tighter.

 

A big deal? Not really.

 

In fact, the downsides aren't really much of a problem at all. Like everyone else who wants a vertical design, you'll make do.

 

After all, it's a pretty small price to pay for a business card that automatically stands out a bit better. Wouldn't you agree?

Cartoon Logo An intriguing affair!

   

The other day I was going through the newspaper - Just flipping through the pages. Nothing new, a regular routine, or you can say a daily affair. Sometimes I wonder how can reading a newspaper be some sort of leisure activity for someone.

 

Completely disinterested, I was going through the same old news when something caught my eye……it was a real bright and beautiful business logo. I smiled as I looked at it. It was a beautifully sketched cartoon logo symbolizing a business of a company engaged in graphic design, mascot design, cartoon logo design, stationery design and web design services. It was staring out at me and had a story to tell. One expression was enough to trigger many thoughts and feelings. Feeling of humor – Some sort of a strange attraction to the cartoon character and therefore to the company behind it. I could see through the marketing cleverness behind it but was happy to be led on. I stopped and read through the advertisement, the name of the company and its business. Next, my focus went to the character. I was able to identify that the character was not just an employee but was happy with his company, which made him cherish his job. And, I thought to myself, if he was happy and fun then the company behind it should be professional and capable of keeping their customers happy. I hear you say “But that is no logic” and I agree there was nothing logical here, but just my emotional trail of thoughts – A feeling of positive experience. I am sure you have seen many companies use this in their advertising strategy – Faces of smiling models!

 

The radiance depicted through the expressions of this cartoon logo was infectious. The next thing I knew was trying to get onto their website to find a bit more about the values and culture of this organization. The one thing I thought of was that it must be a pleasure to use the products of this company. There was something about the cartoon expression that assured me this company must be high in its values, must safeguard the interests of its clients and going the extra mile to satisfy their customers.

 

Then I started to think about the whole experience created by a simple but funny looking cartoon character. Wearing my marketing hat I thought how different companies could create some sort of cartoon character or a mascot design to convey a compelling message and a positive brand experience. There is always some element of vibrance attached with cartoon logos that inculcates an impulsive inquisition within our minds. Once you look at the expressive features or the glimmer in their eyes, you automatically want to know more. You get transported to another world – Probably to connecting to your inner child, which many of us cherish. More isn’t enough! You now try imagining the character in different poses and expressions.

 

Cartoon logos are explicit, pleasing as well as magnetic. The best part about them is that they say it all without having to speak! You don’t even need to write taglines or phrases. Their expressions do the trick.

 

Cartoon logos have always been popular especially if one is dealing with a brand or company that targets children products and services. They are the simplest manner by which one can make a presentation and answer all the questions simultaneously.

My Top Ten Website Pet Peeves

 I do a lot of surfing on the Internet. I’m always Googling something. Sometimes I’m doing business research. Other times I might be shopping, looking for fun stuff, free stuff, product reviews, or news. The Internet is a wonderful thing when it’s done right. When websites are designed poorly, it can be very annoying.

 

My top ten pet peeves about the design of web pages:

 

 Websites with nothing on the home page to identify itself.

 

You’ve seen them. Nice graphics, artistic, elegant looking home pages with no information. It might say “ BXY Inc.”, with a link for ‘Contact’ and a list of clients. You click on every link, but you still don’t know what the company does.

 

 Flashy, sparkly, swirling intro pages.

 

You click on a link, expecting to get someone’s home page with the information you’re after. What you get is a page with pretty pictures flashing or blinking or swirling around. It does this for several seconds, or longer if you’re not lucky.

 

Website programmers enjoy playing with these fancy features (ooh, aah!). They look cool, but they waste the reader’s time. They serve no useful purpose, unless you’re selling flashy, sparkly things.

 

Another kind of intro page that is slightly amusing … you click on the link to a website and you get another page that just says “click here to enter”.

 

 Music, or any other sound, that starts up when you click on the home page and you can’t turn it off.

 

In the first place, I resent it when people assume I want to listen to their choice of music. There should at least be the option to turn it off.

 

I find a website that has some good content that I’m interested in, so I go to their home page and the music starts playing some sentimental, mushy song like “Feelings”. So I hit the ‘stop’ button on my browser, but the music goes on … and on.

 

OK, fine, I click on one of their interesting links and thank you God, the music stops. When I’m finished with that page, I have to go back to the home page to get to the next link and guess what happens! That’s right – “Feelings, whoa, whoa, whoa, feelings….” So I quickly hit the next link. They have several interesting links on their homepage so I’m am going back and forth 15 times and the music is going off and on 15 times.

 

Pretty soon, my husband says, “What the heck are you doing over there?” So I either give up on that website or mute my sound.

 

 Excessive drop down menus.

 

Drop down menus have their place when you have an option of 50 states or 100 countries, but I think they should be avoided when there are only a few menu options. This is another one of those cool features programmers like to play with that isn’t necessarily productive for the user.

 

One problem I have with drop down menus is that too often they are coded in text about the size of the width of my cat’s whiskers. You have to have the dexterity of a Swiss watch maker to click on the right option.

 

If the drop down menus have several nested levels – one wrong click on level 5 and you have to start over!

 

If you have a drop down menu with 100 items, for heaven’s sake, please have them in alphabetical order! I was filling out a form with a drop down menu with about 100 countries listed in random order. I had to read the whole list and I finally found my country near the bottom listed between China and Transylvania!

 

 Too many moving parts.

 

Too many moving graphics on every page make it hard to read the content. I know, it’s fun to have cutesy animated graphics on personal web pages, but they shouldn’t get in the way of reading the content. A little animation is interesting and artistic – too much is annoying and cheesy.

 

Oh, let’s not forget the most annoying graphics of all – animated banner ads that talk to you! Excessive animated banners are distracting and annoying and they look unprofessional on business pages. If a page has too many of them, I won’t stay there long.

 

 Web page that is too long or too big.

 

Long web pages are too hard to follow. These are the web sites where the first page goes on and on with no discernable structure. It’s like trying to read a 400 page book on 1 very long sheet of paper with no chapter breaks.

 

Web pages with huge pictures are a problem, especially for Internet surfers on a dial-up connection. Pictures should be resized to no more than 50k-100k and/or compressed. When someone is on a dial-up connection, it can literally take 5 or 10 minutes for a bunch of large pictures to be displayed.

 

Couple a bunch of large pictures with a web page that never ends and you might as well go watch your favorite movie while the page is loading. People on a slow connection will just give up and go to someone else’s website.

 

Totally invalid search results.

 

If you spend a significant amount of time researching on the Internet you have probably run into this. You enter ‘cat jewelry’ in the search engine and you get a page that is selling a bunch of stuff, but it has nothing to do with cats or jewelry – and it’s not a rock group called Cat Jewelry either.

 

This happened because the keeper of that website is using the search keyword phrase ‘cat jewelry’ for their website because they found out it is a popular keyword. This is known as keyword spamming.

 

What are these people thinking? I guess they think if you throw enough spam against the wall, some if it will stick.

 

If Google catches you keyword spamming they send a burly guy named Bruno out to stomp on your keyboard. No, seriously, they drop you from their ‘lists’ and act like you don’t exist.

 

Websites that look like they were shot out of a shotgun.

 

These websites often have the #5 problem also – going on and on with no structure. They have tons of obnoxious banner graphics with no common theme. ‘Save the Orphan Rats’, ‘Best Long Distance Rates’, ‘Are you a good kisser?’, ‘Free Insurance Quotes’. They have all kinds of unrelated text links in different text sizes and colors, with no organization or relationship.

 

Often these unorganized, unfocused websites use about 15 different fonts, sizes, and colors, giving it the look of the work of a 10 year old.

 

Somewhere on this website there must be something related to what I Googled to get there, but darned if I can find it!

 

Text size that is too small or too large.

 

Have you ever seen a web page where the text size is so large you have to scroll down to read 3 words? Does the author of that website think they will get their point across by shouting at the top of their lungs? How smart does that make the author of the 4 inch letters look?

 

Sometimes the text size is way too small. It must be wonderful to have such great eyesight that you can comfortably read letters the size of the year on a penny from 18 inches away. It’s ridiculous to go to all the work of creating a website with great content, but it’s too hard to read. I know sometimes you can change the text size in your browser, but sometimes you can’t.

 

Content is hard to read because of text and/or background colors.

 

The purpose of having written content on your website is so people can read it, right? So why make it hard to read by having light pink text that you can barely see on a pink background. Add to this scenario text that is too small (see #2) above and have some butterflies or fairies flittering across the screen, and you have a pretty picture that is impossible to read!

 

The easiest to read is a very dark text on a very light background. Even white text on a black background is harder to read.

 

When you create a Website Design Firm or web page, avoid anything that wastes the reader’s time or causes confusion. Too many fancy features slow down the loading speed. If you want people to read your content, make it easy to read. Your structure and design should be straightforward and organized. Special effects aren’t just for the movies anymore; we are in the midst of the Internet generation trying their best to outdo the computer language of their forefathers, HTML. Flash is now the standard for high-impact web content and animation to the monitors of computers around the globe. Anything less is considered to be sub-par.

 

There are basically two types of graphics- Bitmap images and Vector graphics. As a general rule of thumb, any scanned image is a Bitmap (like when you edit a photograph) while any drawing made in a computer is saved as a Vector graphic. These types of programs use a series of mathematic equations to create lines, shapes and ultimately drawings. Flash is Vector animation software, originally designed to create animations for use and display on web pages. This trait also makes the highly entertaining page load much faster than HTML, as Flash “caches” the movies so they don’t need to be reloaded each time the site is visited. HTML also has this “cache” feature, but the speed and quality “lifelike” animation of Flash simply makes for no competition.

 

HTML served its purpose of creating the traditional “front page of a newspaper” type of website, and did a fine job for the time. Bitmap images were the photos and snapshots taken by the staff photographer, and the HTML is the plain text. As computer programs and software began to evolve along the with the growth of the Internet, it soon became pretty common knowledge that HTML’s lack of excitement would become outdated.

 

If you’re still unsure about having a Flash intro on your website, think about this: over 90% of all computers in the world have a Flash Player installed- that’s up from 80% just 5 years ago. This means that the demand for such graphics and displays is here and increasing at every click of a mouse. Flash has basically no browser issues and can be used on any Mac or PC.

 

If there is a downside to Flash, it would have to be the fact that plain text doesn’t work very well with it –that’s part of the reasoning behind creating a Flash introduction to your site, leaving the pertinent text/key information to HTML. While an HTML introduction will get the attention of thousands of potential customers and clients and bring them into your site, a Flash intro will grab their attention and keep them coming back. Why? Basically, Flash is entertaining (like an X-Box) and HTML is, well, Pong.

Additionally, you must also be careful about linking to sites that are suspicious or host illegal content. Usability – is one of the latest notions that busted into our lives recently, besides Search Engine Optimization and Accessibility. All three notions appear to be very important for everyone who struggles to gain some clicks or impressions on the web, but all the theory standing beside these notions seems to me a little bit too much. And I’m going to explain why.

 

I recently started to work on a project about usability - theory and practice in online stores - trying to prove that every marketing department not considering usability as a major point in developing an online store will cause major loses for their company. SEO is very seriously treated by these marketing departments but usability and accessibility, even if they do not represent a new term in web developing, are still considered unimportant factors in business strategy.

 

Even if it took many years for SEO to be treated seriously by marketers, I think no business can afford to waste years when it comes to their Website usability. Why is that? Make some calculations please. Considering the fact that more then 50% of online customers abandon their shopping carts and it is estimated that online shopping will represent a 30 billion dollars business in the next 5 years, how much money a company will lose by not taking into considerations the user needs and expectations? Custom Web Site and tested users’ responses to every little change made in layout, labeling or link structure. And I’ve applied all the new stuff in my customers’ Websites. But most important is that I’m aware that usability matters and I have to center my Websites on what user wants and needs.
